His mother died in 1910.

His father remarried in 1913

In 1921 James, an apprentice engine fitter, was living with his father, mother, 2 siblings and a step-brother at 22, Chester Street, Widnes. ^[2]

He married Olive Millicent Rowland. Their marriage was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1933 in County Durham. ^{[3] [4]}

In 1939 a chemical works fitter & metal turner, he was with his wife in Widnes. ^[5]
