Biography
William Seddon was born on 21 Oct 1823 in Wigan, Lancashire, England to Peter Seddon and Sarah.
William Seddon, born 21 Oct 1823, son of Peter, a weaver, & Sarah, residing at Wigan Lane, was christened on 12 Apr 1824 at All Saints in Wigan.[1]
William's mother passed away before 1836. His father remarried on 4 Jan 1836, to the widow Ellen Needham (nee Files/Fyldes).[2]
In 1841 William Seddon (age 16) lived at Wigan Lane in Wigan with his father Peter (45-49), stepmother Ellen (40-44), four siblings: Alice (11), John (11), Jane (9), and Thomas (1), stepbrother George Needham (10), and stepsister Alice Needham (8).[3]
William Seddon (son of Peter Seddon) and Mary Ann Fairbrother (daughter of Thomas Fairbrother) were married on 8 Jan 1844 in Standish, Lancashire.[4] The marriage was registered in Wigan in the first quarter of the year.[5]
A son was living with them in 1851, but no birth registration has been confirmed - his age indicates he might have been born before they married, but there are no records under Fairbrother either. It's possible he was not their biological child:
In 1851 Will Seddon (age 27, Iron Forgeman) lived at Peel Street in Bury, Lancashire with his wife Mary Ann (29, Domestic), son John (8, Scholar), and four lodgers: James Hardman (28, Iron Driller), Ann Hardman (29, Cotton Spinner), Alfred Hardman (4, Scholar), and John Hardman (4 months).[6]
In 1861 William Seddon (age 37, ... At Iron Forge) lived at Victoria Street in Elton, Lancashire with his wife Mary Ann (40) and two boarders: Bridget Mah (12, Scholar) and Catherine Mah (10, Scholar).[7]
Unable to locate William on the 1871 census.
In 1881 William Seddon (age 59, Forgeman B Smith Unemployed) and his wife Mary A (58, Annuitant) lived at Mill Lane in Aspull, Lancashire in the household of their nephew-in-law James Ambrose (27, Colliery Labourer) and niece Mary A Ambrose [nee Fairbrother] (25, Cotton Factory Hand) - also in the household were James & Mary's two daughters Mary A Ambrose (2) and Elizabeth Ambrose (1), three other relatives: Hannah Fairbrother (20, Cotton Factory Hand), Elizabeth Fairbrother (14, Cotton Factory Hand), and John Wm Fairbrother (0), and lodger Elizabeth Simm (9, Scholar).[8]
William Seddon passed away in 1886, aged 63 years. His death was registered in Bury in the last quarter of the year.[9]
