Some History of Slovakia

The SEDORY / Szegyory families need to understand that what is now known as Slovakia had actually been ruled by the Hungarians for hundreds of years (beginning in 1000 AD) as part of the Kingdom of Hungary. After wars with the Ottomans in the 16th and 17th centuries; mostly in the western part of the kingdom, the Habsburgs of Austria began to dominate their kingdom. The War for Independence (1703–1711) and later even the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 finally resulted in the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 which created the "dual monarchy" of Austria-Hungary (often referred to as the Austro-Hungarian Empire). This lasted from 1867 to 1918; the end of the "Great War" (World War 1), when that empire was split into many countries, including Czechoslovakia (1918-1939). Note that the official language of the Kingdom of Hungary remained Latin until 1836, when Hungarian was introduced. And due to the influence of the Austrian Habsburgs, some of the German language was also in circulation. Of course, Slovak families had always used their own language at home, and it evolved along with Czech and other languages throughout the region in spite of its foreign rulers.

Biography

My ancestry includes the line of SEDORY's who came from a small village called Orkucany (also called Orkuta in Magyar=Hungarian) when it was still under the rule of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It was a mile or so southeast of the small town of Sabinov, on the Torysa River in northeastern Slovakia, and Sabinov is about 10 miles northwest of the city of Prešov (or in Hungarian: "Eperjes"; which you'll see below as the place where two books containing a few short genealogical trees, including my Great Grandfather's family, were published). This area was in the former S'aris County (Hungarian: Saros Megye). That village was demolished during Soviet control, quite some time after the end of World War II, so the modern-day suburb called Orkucany is much different than how it appeared centuries ago.
In 1907 and 1908, a friend of the family (or distant relative) by the name György Gusztáv Szentgyörgyi had two books published which contain a small genealogical tree of what became my Sedory family in the United States (see "References" below), and in which he claimed all Szegyory's were direct descendants of a certain Tamás in the 13th century! But, as best I can make out, he had no evidence for this other than some oral history given to him as a boy from his grandmother. Both of these books were professionally scanned by Google (one having been found at a Harvard University library), and turned into readable PDF files with surprisingly few errors. They are, of course, written by someone who grew up in 19th century Slovakia writing in the Hungarian language of that era; with even a bit of German poetry and song.
For more about the origin of our name, see Chapter 1, Footnote 3 of my online edition of my father's autobiography. This autobiography contains a great deal of information about my Sedory family, and in later chapters even things about my younger self.

Daniel, going forward, please be aware that on WikiTrtree, we do not deliberately create duplicate profiles. If you have an alternate spelling of a surname for a managed profile, the process is to contact the profile manager with the information you have and the sources, so that they can review it, and if needed, correct the surname on the original profile. Creating a duplicate is not the way to correct it. Also, please be aware that no profiles will be "removed" from the list of the Cherry Mine Disaster victims. As stated on the project page, the names are from the official state report. Profiles are adjusted as needed, when evidence of an alternate spelling becomes available.

Daniel, thanks for writing! There's a great help page on the trusted list feature here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Trusted_List

Most profiles on WikiTree are open for editing by all members, but you can certainly keep close relatives and recently deceased folks at other privacy levels than Open in order to protect sensitive information. See https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Privacy

WikiTree really is a collaborative global tree, so we don't maintain ownership of ancestor profiles and often work together on the same folks. It certainly takes some getting used to compared to other sites where we maintain our own trees.

I hope that helps!

Hi Daniel, you messaged me back in August and I'm sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you. I added Susan as George's wife, I think I've always meant to but just never got around to it!
Hi Daniel

Thanks for completing the merge and the question.

We try not to delete profiles created, we either merge duplicate or reuse them.

You are at present adding family to the tree we could have chosen say to reuse the one with the incorrect surname to add another member with that surname Berggren to that side of the family, it could have become Anna's fathers profile. This would mean we also had to disconnect Berggren-147 from the then current parents profiles and link to Ann's profile as her father

Explore the following it may help.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Deletion_FAQ

Look at the edit side of Harolds profile under father you will see [replace/remove father] this is where you can detach then add other profiles.

Once you get the hang of it all works, honest

Hi

I have proposed the merge of the two profiles

As Profile Manager you can change a birth name by clicking on the birth name only PM' can change a birth name.

However the merge will hopefully sort the issue for you. As PM for both profiles the merge should be straight forward once you respond to both message that you will have received

Hope this helps

Hi Daniel

Thank you for your message. The siblings are attached to two different profiles which is why they show as half siblings

I have proposed a merge of the two profiles for the mum. If you look at the father's profile you will note he is married to two women same name

Once you accept the merge the family will be shown correctly

All best Janet

Thank you for volunteering. You are now a full member of WikiTree.

Start with the New Member How-To Pages - they are really useful as you add profiles and learn your way around:

Let me know if you require assistance. I am happy to help. After adding my own family and ancestors I have found many cousins and distant ancestors here on WikiTree.
