Godfrey was born in 1805. He is the son of Adam See and Dorothy Stump. He passed away in 1878. [1]
Godfrey See was born 1801-1802 and died on 28 August 1879. [2] On 28 November 1844 he was married to Charlotte C. Neff by Alfred Chenowith. [3] Charlotte was the daughter of Jacob H. Neff. She was born on 6 June 1820 and died on 28 June 1874. [4] Godfrey and Charlotte are buried in the See Cemetery at Bass on the South Fork.
As the youngest son in German families often did, Godfrey and his family lived in his father’s household until Adam’s death, and he probably expected to inherit the family farm. But in the absence of a will by his father, Godfrey inherited no more than one child’s share. When the land was divided in 1871, Lot # 1, 58 acres, on the south side of the main prong of South Fork, embracing most of the Big Island, was assigned to Godfrey, and his claim to 62 acres on Sugar Tree Run on the South Fork Mountain, that Godfrey had already sold, was recognized. [5]
Godfrey and Charlotte had five children, all born near Bass, W. Va.: Mary F. A. (b. 1847); George G. E. (1850–5 Jan. 1868); Dorothy A. E. (20 Mar. 1853–28 Dec. 1924); Phoebe A. S. (b. 9 Mar. 1857); Susan L. B. V. (25 Sept. 1863–14 July 1924).
