Memorial of Joseph Seelye, late soldier in the Loyal Rangers
most humbly sheweth that in the year 1776 he was employed to bring men on their way to New York and there deliver to other aids appointed for that purpose that they might get past the Rebel lines to his Majesty's troops. In this service your Memorialist remained from September 1776 until January 1777, during which time he engaged and sent a number of men to the Kings troops. The 9th January 1777 your memorialist was taken prisoner and committed to Litchfield Goal where he remained four weeks and was brought to trial and sentenced to be in Simsbury Mine for the term of two years, when he and another Loyalist set fire to the upper works in the night and escaped the 23rd of May.
Your Memorialist then made his way to Crown lines and joined Col. Peters with a number of men whom he brought in and with them served faithfully during the war which the officers of the Regiments can certify.
Your Memorialist is an old man with a family and has drawn but one hundred acres of land; although he brought 25 men to the King and service who served faithfully. Your Memorialist therefore humbly prays your Honour will be please to represent his case to his Excellency the Right Hon, the commander in Chief.
Your Memorialist as in duty bound shall ever pray. Joseph Seelye
Upon examining into the merits and pretentions of the above Memorialist, it is our opinion that he is an object worthy of His Excellency Lord Dorcheshiers notice, and do therefore beg leave to recommend him for four hundred acres of additional land, exclusive of one hundred, which he has already received. Signed: Richard Duncan, John Mumo, Timothy Sherwood
