Biography

Henry Martyn Seely

SEELY, Henry Martyn, educator, was born in South Onondaga, N.Y., Oct. 2, 1828. He was the son of Joseph Owen Seely and Susanna (Stearns) Seely. He was the grandson of Gideon, Jr., and Esther (Owen) Seely, and of George and Hannah (Bailey) Stearns. ^[1]

Henry was a descendant, in the eighth generation, of Robert Seely, who came to America in 1630, was a pioneer and surveyor, resided successively at Watertown and Weathersfield, N.Y., New Haven, Conn., Huntington, L.I., Stamford, Conn., and New York city, and died in New York, Oct. 14, 1667. ^[1]

Henry was graduated from Yale, Ph.B., 1856, A.M., 1860, and from the Berkshire Medical institution, M.D., 1857; was professor of chemistry at the latter institution, 1857-62; professor of chemistry and toxicology at the medical department of the University of Vermont, 1860-67, and was elected professor of chemistry and natural history at Middlebury college, Vt., in 1861. ^[1]

Henry was twice married; first, Sept. 1, 1858, to Adelaide E., daughter of Lewis and Desiah (Halbert) Hamblin of Perryville, N.Y.; and secondly, June 11, 1867, to Sarah T., daughter of Amos and Susanna (Barnaby) Matthews of New Haven, VT. ^[1]

Henry was the unsuccessful candidate for governor of Vermont on the Prohibition ticket in 1886 and 1888; secretary of the state board of agriculture, 1875-78, and edited three volumes of reports; a member of the American Chemical society; the Geological Society of America; the Vermont Botanical club; the Biological society of Washington, D.C., and various medical, social and political organizations of his adopted state. ^[1]

Note: Henry Martyn Seely (1828-1917) was Professor of Chemistry, Natural History, and Geology at Middlebury from 1861-1895. The son of Joseph Owen and Susanna (Stearns) Seely, he was born in South Onandaga, New York on October 2, 1828. Seely received a Ph.D. from Yale in 1856. He taught at the Berkshire Medical Institute, where he received an M.D., in 1857, and taught at the University of Vermont before coming to Middlebury in 1861.

In 1867-1868 he studied at Freiberg and Heidelberg, Germany. He contributed many papers to scientific journals and was the Secretary of the Vermont Board of Agriculture from 1875-1878.

Seely's legacy to Middlebury College endures as one of the College's most significant landmarks. Since 1917, when John Martin Thomas, Seely's son-in-law, moved into his former residence, the house at 3 South Street in Middlebury has served as the official residence of Middlebury College presidents.
