Biography

Charles is considered a "Pioneer Oregon Professional". [1]

Charles entered New Albany Business College to study law in 1872, He was admitted to the bar in 1874 and practiced in Indiana for three years. He moved to Oregon in 1877 and passed the Oregon Bar in 1877.

"Gus" as he was called, practiced law in Portland and Salem until 1884. He also organized a prohibitionist society in 1882. He married Ianthe Downing around this time. Ianthe was the daughter of George S Downing and Missouri Evans Downing. George was an 1853 "overlander" pioneer with family roots in Scotland and Ireland.

Gus was elected to the Oregon Legislature for the 1894/95 session. He was later appointed as US Commisioner at Skagway, Alaska by President McKinley. While in Alaska from 1898-1901 with his family, he presided over the coroner's inquest for Soapy Smith, a reputed crime mobster [2]. Soapy died in a spectacular shootout on the Juneau Wharf in Skagway.

Gus and Ianthe had two children, Emma and Bertha.
