Biography

Private John Seibel served in the United States Civil War.

John L. Seibel was born on 04 Aug 1844 in Bascom, Seneca County, Ohio.[1] He was the son of Theobaldus Seibel and Margaret (unknown) Seibel.[2]

At the time of the 1860 Census, they were living in Findlay, Hancock County, Ohio. His father was working as a potash manufacturer.[3]

He joined the 57th Ohio Infantry Regiment on 01 Dec 1861. He was assigned as a Private with Company G.[4]

He mustered out on 14 Nov 1864 at Chattanooga, Tennessee, upon completion of his term of service.[4][1]

He married Elizabeth Schwab on 15 Jan 1878 in Hancock County, Ohio. The marriage was officiated my C. S. Sprecher, minister of the gospel.[5] Together they had at least the following children:[6][7]

  1. Alfred F. Seibel (11 Nov 1880 - 20 Dec 1969)
  2. George Seibel (10 Oct 1888)

He applied for and received an invalid's pension based on his military service on 19 Aug 1891.[8]

At the time of the 1900 Census, they were living at 616 N. Cory Street in Findlay, Hancock County, Ohio. He was working as a rake factory.[9]

At the time of the time of the 1910 Census, they were living at 612 N. Cory Street in Findlay. He was working as a watchman at a gas office.[10]

His son, George, married the daughter, Bernice, of one of his fellow soldiers in the 57th Ohio, Company G, Frederick Bickelhaupt, on 05 Dec 1917.[11] Sadly, George was killed the following year while serving in the United States Army in France.[12]

At the time of the 1920 Census, they were still living at 612 N. Cory Street in Findlay. He continued to work as a watchman at a gas office.[13]

By the time of the 1930 Census, he was no longer working. They continued to live at 612 N. Cory Street in Findlay.[14]

He passed away on 13 Jan 1931 at his home in Findlay.[2] He was buried at Maple Grove Cemetery, Findlay, Hancock County, Ohio.[15]

Following his death, his wife received a widow's pension based on his military service.[8]

The Veteran's Affairs Master Index lists his discharge as 30 Nov 1864. I have followed the Ohio Roster, which states 14 Nov 1864.
