I believe Mary S. Simmons or Simons is the granddaughter of Benjamin Simmons, II. I'm not sure which of his sons is her father, but it is one of them.

She doesn't name her first son after his father Philip Hawker Selby and her second son after Benjamin Simmons (Selby) for no reason!

Also, her family of Simmons is just as prominent in the officer class in the Revolutionary War as are the Simmons!

Philip Selby and Mary Simmons were about twenty when they married in 1794.

It was such a tragedy when their three youngest children died in 1805.

Their children:

Martha Selby (b.1795 d.1819) Rebecca Selby (b.1797) Nancy Hawker Selby (Carlisle) (b.1799 d.1884) Samuel Selby (b.1801 d.1805)DY Sarah Selby (b.1801 d.1805)DY Margaret Selby (b.1804 d.1805)DY Phillip Hawker Selby (b.1806 d.1887) Mary Selby (b.1812) James Selby (b.1814 d.1841) William Magruder Selby (b.1817 d.1832) Owen Evans Selby (b.1822 d.1890)

They had been married about thirty-nine years and their son, Owen was about ten years old when Philip died on March 11, 1833.

The 1850 Census revealed Mary was born in South Carolina and was living alone in Oktibbeha County, Mississippi. Her son, Owen and family lived on the farm next door. Her son, Philip and family lived on the farm on the other side. Household members: Mary (76).

The 1860 Census revealed Mary was living alone. Her son, Owen and family lived on the farm next door. Household members: Mary (87).

The 1870 Census revealed Mary was living alone. Her son, Owen and family lived on the farm next door. Household members: Mary Selby (95), cook, Nelly Selby (60) and farm laborer, Sisley Bordwell (50).

Mary lived to age 95.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Philip by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Philip:
