SELF: Stephen Self m. 1712 Jane Joyce Garner. They are the parents of Job Self I, Phillip Self, Willoughby Self I, and Benjamin Self, in Westmoreland Co., Virginia.

Willoughby Self I married Ann Hudson before 1735 and died before 1748. Willoughby Self II was on Bute Co. NC 1762/1766 tax lists, etc.. Willoughby Self III, b.1751; m. 1777 to Hannah Blackwood. He was on Bute NC Tax List. It's my understanding they dropped most men from Tax Rolls after they turned age 60.

Job Self I born abt 1715 Westmoreland Co, VA. He married Nancy Hudson sister of Ann and was in Fairfax County Va. in 1749/1754. Children: Vincent Self, Isaac Self, Nancy, Parrish, William, Bradley, Job Self II born ca. 1744/1751 in Va.

Job Self II born 1744/1751 Va., married Elizabeth Blackard and had children; Children: Sarah born ca. 1780; Job Self III born ca. 1775; Jesse Self born ca. 1782; Celia Self, born ca. 1783 - all in North Carolina.

This time-line of Deeds, Witness of Deeds, and Tax Lists are furnished by Andy Blackards' research of Blackard and Self in NC.

This proves the possible line descent of Job I, Job II, to Job (John) III that marries first Mary Jones in Franklin County NC and then after her death marries (Mary) Tamor Stringfellow in Alabama.

1780 Franklin Deed Book 1-138 Willoughby Self of Franklin to John Hudson of the same Dec 7, 1780 for 200A on Suck Branch adj. Charles Yarborough [sic], Robert Allen.

1782 Franklin Deed 4-40 Nov 26, 1782 Wm. Jeffreys of Granville to Henry Cooper, Sr. 100A NS Buffalo adj. Wm. Hudson, Job Self Job Self II, son of Job Self I and Nancy Hudson, and was a juror in Franklin County NC in 1786. Note: the Hudsons appear to be in Barbados earlier. Willoughby Self married Ann Hudson, a sister to Nancy Hudson, in Va. in the same time period that Job married Nancy in Va. Willoughby Self and Ann had a daughter Rebecca Self, born ca. 1735 that married Thomas Ownby Jr. as his second wife.

Job Self II is enumerated in 1800 Franklin County NC Census as follows; 1 male under 10; 1 male 10-16; 1 male 16-26 (Job Self III @ approximately 19/25 years old); 1 male over 45: Job Self II born ca. 1751); 2 females under 10; 1 female 16-26; 1 female over 45.

Job (John) Self III born ca. 1775/1780 in Franklin County NC married Mary Jones, daughter of James Jones and his first wife unknown, in Franklin County, NC on December 27 1803. Job Self lived shortly in Franklin until his father died, or moved as no longer on Census and left for Richland County SC and then to Laurens Co., Georgia, where he is enumerated as Job Self Jr. in 1820. The next records for him is the purchase of land in Autauga County, Alabama, and the 1830 Census. It was a Public Lands sale at Cahaba, Alabama and was 40 acres and 9 hundredths of an acre purchased for full payment by Job Self of Autauga, Alabama on June 22 1837.

The 1830 Census of Autauga County AL. shows A. (Alfred) Self born 1804 enumerated as: 1 male under 5; 1 male 20-30; 1 female 20-30; 3 females under 5. Job Self enumerated as: 1 male under 5: Albert born 1826; 1 male 5-10: John born 1823; 2 males 15-20: James born 1810, & William born 1818; 1 male 20-30: Egbert born 1807; 1 male 50-60: Job born 1775/1780; 2 females 10-15: Tamer born 1820/21 and Nancy born December 1814; 1 female 40-50: wife, Tamer

Using Census Records children of Job Self and Mary Jones Self are:

  1. Alfred Self born ca. 1804
  2. Egbert Self born ca. 1807
  3. James Self born ca. 1810
  4. Nancy Self born ca. 1814 (on 1900 Census she gives her birthdate as Dec. 1814)

Mary Jones Self has to have died shortly after birth of Nancy.

Tamar (Emma) is the first child of Tamar (Mary) Stringfellow Self and Job (John) Self. Reading some of Nancy Self Jones oral Self history, transcribed by Florida Marsh, she shows a dislike for her step-mother and she doesn't give order of the birth of her siblings. She does remark Tamora / Tamar didn't approve of her marrying Mordecai Jones after her brother ran them down and found she was compromised, and took her back to Autauga to marry. There is no mention of going to Missouri as some suggest as census trails show NC, SC, GA, and Alabama before entering Louisiana. If Tamar married Job soon after loss of Mary Jones Self, she certainly had her hands full with 3 children under six years old, and a reason in Nancy's' oral history, she complained of being nothing but a baby-sitter for younger siblings. This certainly means Mary Jones Self was deceased(1815-1816) before her father James Jones' Will was read or his death.

Note: This is nothing but the opinion of this author on children of Job and wives Mary Jones and Tamar (Mary) Stringfellow, using Census reports without a death date of Mary and a marriage date (1815-1817) of Job and Tamor. Children of Job Self and Tamor Stringfellow Self are;

  1. Tamar Self Leak born ca.1816 (indicating parents' marriage in 1815)
  2. William Self born ca. 1818
  3. John Self born ca. 1824
  4. Albert Self born ca. 1826

James Jones died in September or October of 1823 and was married to his second wife Tamor Jones (unk. Maiden name). James left a Will dated January 15 1822 recorded in Will Book G, Franklin County, NC 1812-1824 845 (173) If debts cannot be satisfied, they to be made up from the following legacies. To my son, David Jones $2.00, with all that He has already received. To my daughter, Salley Timberlake, wife of James Timberlake $2.00, with all that she has already received. To my son, Allen Jones $2.00, with all he has already received. To my daughter, Mary Self, wife of Job Self $2.00, with all she has already received. To my daughter, Barsheba King, wife of Bennett King, $2.00, with all she has already received. To my son, John K. Jones, $2.00, with all he has already received. To my daughter, Nancy Jones, $2.00, with all she has already received. To my wife Tamor Jones, the land and plantation where I now live, which is the residue not deeded to my sons David and Allen Jones. Also to her 1 Still during her life, and all the rest of the estate not devised away. After my wife's death, I give to my son David Jones the residue of my land. After her death, I give to my grandson, James Jones, son of David Jones, 1 Still. Executors: Friend Jones Cook, my wife Tamor Jones, my son David Jones. 15 January 1822. Wit: Thomas Young (x), Oscar Green. Tamor Jones, wife of deceased James Jones, entered a complaint to the Court of Equity in Franklin County NC and was transcribed by Edleen Rodrigues, a descendant of Barsheba Jones King, a daughter of James Jones and wife of Bennett King.
