Selfridge was born on February 8, 1882 in San Francisco, California. He was the grandson of Rear Admiral Thomas Oliver Selfridge Sr. He was the son of Edward Augustus Selfridge, whose brother was Rear Admiral Thomas Oliver Selfridge, Jr. He graduated from the US Military Academy in 1903 and received his commission in the Artillery Corps. In 1908, he took a test flight on an airplane with Orville Wright which crashed. Wright was injured and Selfridge was killed. He was the first person to die in an airplane crash. A USAF base in Mt. Clemens, Michigan was named after him.
