Notes

WHAT FOLLOWS IS A TIMELINE AND RESEARCH NOTES REGARDING THE LIFE OF ANNA BARBARA SELL....

RESEARCH, GERMANY ARCHIVES: The main archive for the state of Baden-Wurttemberg is: Baden-Wurttembergisches Haupstaatsarchiv Stuttgart, Konrad-adenauer-Str.4, 70173 Stuttgart, Germany. There are several other "local" archives within Baden. The one that looks most promising for the Bittle/Sell/Strauss/Ruediger research is: Staatsarchiv Wertheim, Bronnbach Nr. 19, 97877 Wertheim, Germany. (Source: The German Research Companion, p. 103-04.) ----Jana Stokes, Mar 2005.

RESEARCH, GERMANY ARCHIVES: The http://www.archive-bw.de/... site lists 3 archives in Wertheim: Kreisarchiv Main-Tauber-Kries, Staatsarchiv Wertheim, and Stadtarchiv Wertheim. However Stadtarchiv Wertheim and Kreisarchiv Main-Tauber-Kreis both list as their contact Staatsarchiv Wertheim; the contact (kontakt) for Staatsarchiv Wertheim is Bronnbach 19, 97877 Wertheim,, homepage: http://www.lad-bw.de/staw. -----Jana Stokes, Mar 2005.

RESEARCH, GERMANY LUTHERAN CHURCH ARCHIVES: Evangelische Landeskirche in Baden, Evangelisher Oberkirchenrat, Landeskirchlisches Archiv, Bumenstr. 1, 76133 Karlsruhe, Germany. (Source: The German Research Companion, p. 103-04.) ----Jana Stokes, Mar 2005.

MOTHER: Anna Barbara Sell's mother would have to be born between 1680-1703.

The Urphar church books at times make the Sell or Sellen look like Kelly or Keller.(When I was first learning to read the German script I thought it was Klein--especially since there was a Klein sponsor in the family.) This is because there is a stray mark that shows upon zeroxing, but is faint on viewing the microfilm. The S can also look like a K because part of the S loop is faded out.

I have a note on the back of my Germany map saying that Urphar was formerly in village of : Eichel, Wertheim

HISTORY: From 962-1806 the Urphar area was part of the Holy Roman Empire of German Nation (Heiliges Romisches Reich deutscher Nation, or Das Alte Reich)

RESEARCH, HISTORY: Historisches Lexikon der Deutschen Lander gives a brief history of Wertheim (Grafschft). All in German. The library read through it for me, translating into English. We were looking for something that might have place Urphar in Hessecassel. Couldn't find a Hessecassel connection. German history is interesting. Even when one general area is being under a specific jurisdiction, often inside and outside that area are pockets (the librarian called them enclaves) that are under a different jurisdiction. This brief history covers years 779 to 1814. I do not know if this book has brief history for Urphar or other nearby towns. (FHL INTL 943 E3k Historisches Lexikon der deutschen Lander by Verlag C. H. Beck Munchen. Germany, 1990. ISBN 3 406 348 38 6, p. 607) ----Nov 2003, Jana Stokes

BIRTH POSSIBILITY: There is a family history written by Stillman Biddle in 1910 that claims George Bittle was from Hessel Kassel, Germany. Perhaps this was where George Bittle's wife Anna Barbara Sell was from?? ---Jana Stokes, 2005.

RESEARCH BIRTH: Anna Barbara was having children from 1748-1764 (thats 16 yrs). Lets says 45 is max for bearing children, then 1764-45 is then 1719 is abt the earliest Anna Barbara could have been born. Lets also assume she was at least 16 in 1743 when she got married. 1743-16 is 1727. Johann George Buttel did marry an older women. ----Jana Stokes, Nov. 2005.

1723 BAPT IN URPHAR: GERMAN: 3 Jun Hanss Jorg Sellen ein tochterl. Anna Barbara, getaufft, dessen taufdotlejn ist gewesen Hanss Thomas Oberdorfs tochter. ENGLISH: 1723. 3 Jun Hanss Jorg Sell's daughter Anna Barbara was bapt, the bapt sponsor was Hanss Thomas Oberdorfs daughter. Why was he going to Kembach? (You go through Lindelbach en route). Check Kembach books.

1738 MOTHER'S 2ND MARR TO MICHOEL FLEGER IN URPHAR: GERMAN: 1738 4 Febr copulist w.. Johann Michoel Flegler, Joh Pet. Flegl sohn mit Georg Sellein witteber. ENGLISH: 1738 4 Feb was married Johann Michoel Flegler, Joh Pet. Flegl. son with Georg Sell's widow. (Source: FHL INTL Film 1,238,272 items 1-6 p. 14 Urphar Evg. Marr Register, Mosbach, Baden, Germany) ----Jana Stokes, Jul 2005.

RESEARCH COURT CHARACTERISTICS: According to Adele Maurine Marcum it wouldn't be likely that lower court people crossed out of the ruling state/duchy boundries to another state/duchy via marriage. (Source: Adele Maurine Marcum <German >, German Jurisdictions, South Davis Regional Family History Fair, Mar 2005.)

1743 MARR IN URPHAR TO GEORG BITTLE: 1743. German: "3 7bris wurden copulist, Johann Georg Buttel, mit Anna Barbara, erat Johann Georg Sell, hinterlassene tochter" English: "3 Sep was married, Johann Georg Buttel, with Anna Barbara, erat Johann Georg Sell, left behind daughter." That means George Bittle was 15 3/4 yrs old when he got married. (Source: FHL INTL FILM 1,238,272 items 1-6 Kirchenbuch 1666-1961. Evangelische Kirche Bettingen (A. Wertheim) Parish Reg Bap, Marr, Deaths of Bettingen...) ----Jana Stokes, 2005

1745 POSSIBLE DAU EVA BORN: "1745. 19 7bris ward begrb., Eva, Johann Georg Buttel, daughter 1 1/2 jafs alt. English: 1745. 19 Sep was buried, Eva, Johann Georg Buttel, daughter 1 1/2 years old." (Source: Urphar Evangelical Burial Register, Baden, Germany). I am not sure if this Eva was the dau of George Bittle and Anna Barbara Sell OR if she is the dau of George Bittle, Sr and Margaretha Strauss. If this Eva belongs to George Bittle and Anna Barbara Sell then Anna Barbara Sell was pregnant when she married George Bittle, Jr. ----Jana Stokes, 2005.

1746 SON ANDREAS BAPT IN URPHAR: 1746. German: "28 Jan wurden getauft, L. Andreas, P. Joh georg buttel, M. anna Barbara, ____ Andreas Weissner." English: "28 Jan was baptised, child Andreas, Father Joh georg buttel, Mother anna Barbara, witness Andreas Weissner."

RESEARCH ON THE 1746 WITNESS, ANDREAS WEISSNER:

1748 DAU BAPT IN URPHAR: 1748. German: "20 wurden getauft L. Marie Salome, P. Joh georg Buttel Mat. Anna Barbara, ge? Mat. Salome, Peter flegled? eheweib" English: "20 Jan was baptised L. Marie Salome, Father. Joh georg buttel Mother Anna Barbara, Witness(godmother): Salome, Peter flegle's wife"

RESEARCH ON THE 1748 WITNESS, PETER AND SALOME FLEGER: In the Urphar burials in 1775 Peter Fleger and his wife Maria Salome are listed as the parents of Elisabetha Catherina Fleger who died at age 38. This means that Peter Fleger married bef 1737, and born bef ca 1717. [1775. 27 Feb wurd? begraben, Elisabetha Catharina, Johann Peter Fleglers, das gerichts (court) in Urphar, und Maria Salom, ledign (legitimate) tochter, ihres (her) alters (age) 38 jahr, 9 monath und 27 tag __25 Febr war ___urz woechdam (week) gemuss das hl. ___ dunachs? wars (was) torben?"]

RESEARCH ON THE 1748 WITNESS, PETER AND SALOME FLEGER: Johann Peter Fleger was bapt in 1713, marr in 1735 to Maria Salome Dirhmin?. Maria Salome Dirhim? was bapt in 1717 in Urphar. That means Maria Salome Dirhmin?-Fleger was 31 yrs old when she sponsered Anna Barbara Sell-Buttel's baby.

1750 DAU EVA BARBARA BAPT IN URPHAR: 1750. German: "7th Marxx wurden getauft, Eva Barbara, P. Joh. georg buttel, M. Barbara, xxx Eva, Joh. Peter Klein, tocher". English: 7 March was baptised, eva barbara, P. Joh goerg buttel, M. Barbara, witness Eva, Joh Peter Klein, daughter. (Urphar, Mosbach, Baden, Germany Births, p. 69) ---Nov 2003, Jana Stokes.

RESEARCH ON JOH PETER KLEIN: He, like Peter Fleger, also worked in the court. He was bapt 1682 and died 1756. He marr twice. The second time to Maria Barbara Wirth of Dertingen. Joh Peter/Maria Barbara dau Eva was born in 1732. Eva was 18 when she sponsored Georg Bittle/Anna Barbara Sell daughter. Later Eva Klein would marry Christoph Buttel (a son of Andreas Buttel) and have at least 3 children in Urphar.

1752 IMMIGRATED TO AMERICA

RESEARCH, GERMAN NEWSPAPERS IN PA: no Anna Barbara Sell-Bittle; found no Buttel connection, also checked Klein and Strauss (Source: FHL US/CAN BOOK 974.8 D2h German Settler of PA and Adj Territory from advertisements in German Newspapers Published in Philadelphia and Germantown 1743-1800. By Edward Hocker. Germantown, Philadelphia, PA, 1935.) ---Jana Stokes, Mar 2004.

1764 RESEARCH, SELL RELATIVES: Anna Margareth Sellin, Peter sell's wife sponsors bap (Lowhill) Maria Barbara dau of Biel Mayer and Elisabeth. (Daniel Schumacher's bap rec.) ----Jana Stokes, Jul 2005.
