Biography

Sophia Sellers is a part of US Black heritage.

Proven DNA match to Adam Sellers: "We discovered that we were all DNA matches with the Sellers line, and proved that Adam Sellers, was Sophia Sellers, father, she was his Slave as well. He took her and James Clemens, and their children to Warren County, Ohio, and freed her and the children, James was already freed by Gasper Clements, his father as Owner, in his Will. Sophia was born in 1785 in Virginia, United States. She was the daughter of Adam Sellers.^[1]

In the 1850 census Sophia (age about 65) was living in German, Darke, Ohio.^[1]

In the 1860 census Sophia (age about 75) was living in German, Darke, Ohio, United States.^[2]

In the 1870 census Sophia (age about 85) was living in German, Darke, Ohio, United States.^[3]

Research Notes

On a website entitled "Aboard the Underground Railroad: A National Register of Historic Places Travel Itinerary", it documents that the farmstead of James and Sophia Clemens "is one of the oldest and last remaining agricultural resources in one of Ohio's earliest black settlements, Longtown (Greenville settlement)." The article goes on to state, and the reason for my query, that "the records of the first landowners of Darke County, Ohio, show that James Clemens was the first free black man to purchase land in German township. Arriving with his wife Sophia in 1818 from Virginia, he soon built a thriving farm business. Sophia's maiden name was Sellers, and she is believed to be the daughter of Adam Sellers of Rockingham County, Virginia the former slave owner of James Clemens."
