Biography

Son of Thomas Sellers as per marriage records for Caroline and Rebecca. Born c. 1808 as per death record.

First wife was Catherine Joyce, a widow. William married Catherine on 1 April 1835 at St Thomas Mount, in Presidency of Fort St George, India. Witnesses Mary Bates, John Scanlon, W. Morgan.^[1]

Second wife Caroline Allan (1821-1852). Children: John Alexander (b 1844), Philip (b 1848) and Benjamin (b. 1850). William was a widower when he married Caroline as per the marriage record. Marriage record says William was born in 1809.

Third wife Rebecca Hollingsworth. Record states he is a widower. (Rebecca also was married before to Joseph Caldwell s/o Joseph Caldwell.) Witnesses at marriage are Thomas Sellers, Henry Hollingworth. Record states that Thomas is William's father.

'Allens Indian Mail and Register for British and Foreign India...' shows a William Sellers transferring from the Bengal 50th Foot Regiment to the 70th Foot Regiment in 1851, just before the Indian mutiny of 1857[1]

There is a record for a Courts Martial trial for a William Sellers of the 64th Foot regiment for Dec 23, 1857, and another for Jan 9, 1858, both in Allahbad.

The marriage record for his daughter Amelia shows William's occupation to have been a 'Bombadier, in the Royal Artillery'.

William (age 63) was buried on 12 November 1871 in Vellore, Tamil Nādu, India.^[2][3]
