Dr. John Selman served in the United States Civil War. Enlisted: November 16, 1863 Mustered out: August 5, 1864 Side: CSA Regiment(s): Floyd Legion, Co E
John Thurmond was educated by his father, who was a teacher. He graduated from Graefenberg Medical School of Alabama in 1853, and married Elizabeth Jane Gunn, a native of Alabama in 1853. He began his medical practice at Davidson, Tallapoosa County, Alabama and also practiced at Alexander for ten years. While at Alexander he enlisted in the Confederate Army as a Surgeon. He was with the Fourth Alabama Cavalry, and served until the war was over*. He came to Texas in 1866 with his family. Dr. Selman purchased over 1,050 acres of land at Rural Shade in Navarro County, Texas. Dr. Selman practiced medicine, farmed and ranched in that area until his death on March 20, 1894. Dr. Selman was active in the Masonic Lodge, in politics, and served on the school board as a trustee for sixteen years. He and his wife were active in the Methodist Church of which he served as a Steward until death.
There is no evidence to support that John Selman was with the 4th Alabama Calvary. All Military records point that he was with Floyd Legion, Co E and he only served one year. The story of being a surgeon in the 4th Alabama Calvary is considered a myth.
