Nancy Selman (b 1800, Elbert Co, GA) was the 7th child of Thomas and Jemimah Greenlee Selman (see Benjamion F. Selman family history). Many families in Cherokee County are descendants of these Selmans. If it is true our ancestors watch over their own through the generations, then it must have pleased Thomas Selman (b. April 27, 1762) five generations and 157 years later when Jim Ted Wood, (b. April 27, 1919), his direct descendant, was born on his birthday. Thomas Selman, b. in Stafford Co., VA., d. in Franklin County, TN, also on April 27, 1816. His wife Jemimah, also b. Feb 11, 1863, also in Stafford Co, VA, moved to Benton County, Alabama (now Calhoun County), with her children, where she died in 1844 and is buried. Thomas and Jemimah Selman had 10 children (see Benjamin F. Selman history). In 1846, Thomas Selman II , Benjamin, Nancy, Dorcas, Willis, Mary (brothers and sisters) Selman came to Cherokee County, Texas in a caravan of 60 wagons. They lived in the Linwood area around Old Palestine Cemetery. In upper South Carolina during and immediately after the Revolutionary War there were several Selman families: Jeremiah, William, John, Thomas, Benjamin (probably brothers). Jeremiah Selman (b. 1741, d. ca 1817 Spartenburg, County, SC) and Thomas Selman lived and attended church in the same community there. Jeremiah was a Revolutionary War soldier in the Battle of King's Mountain, and John was in the Battle of Cowpens. There is information on a Jeremiah and a James Selman in the roster of soldiers compiled by the Tennessee Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (by Whitley). Stafford and Abner Selman were sons of either John or Benjamin Selman. Both were born in Stafford County, VA., ca 1780-81 and lived with their uncle Thomas. This family moved to Spartenburg, SC ca., 1782-88, the year Thomas was a witness in a lawsuit of Charles Moore vs. Benjamin Selman. Family letters of T. L. Selman, a descent of Jeremiah Selman and W. J. Selman, a descendant of Thomas Selman, were used as references.-- Kathryn Hart Wood.
