Biography

Genealogically Defined

Simon was born about 1744 and baptised 16th March 1744/5 at St. John the Baptist, Sedlescombe, Sussex, England, the son of Samuel Selms & Elizabeth Selms[1].

Baptism Entry.

Simon, of Sedlescombe, Sussex married Sal Aylward, of Mountfield 7th Feb 1777 in All Saints, Mountfield, Sussex, England by licence. Witnessed by William Aylward & Susan Aylward[2]

Marriage Register Entry.

In 1788, Simon of Whatlington was named on the mortgage of two messuages, oasthouses and land (120 acres) in Whatlington occupied by Sarah Ridge, widow, Simon Selmes and Robert Hiscock, lately purchased from William Ridge of Lewes, gent. he was named along with his brother Stephen Selmes, yeoman of Westfield[3].

Simon was named in the will [1] of his father Samuel Selmes along with his children in 1806

By 1800 he appeared to own his own house (late Mrs. Dukes cottage) in Mountfield[4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19]

In 1806 Simon was renting property belonging to Thomas Daws in Sedlescombe according to Land Tax records[20] though this may have just been farm land that he was working.

Simon was a Yeoman and owned property in Mountfield, Sussex, England

Simon Selmes aged 76 years {b. 1744} died in 1820 in Mountfield, Sussex, England and was buried 9th November 1820 at St. Mary the Virgin, Salehurst, Sussex, England.[21]
