Biography

Chauncey Senft has German Roots.
Chauncey Senft was a Pennsylvanian.

Chauncey, eldest son of George Senft and Rachel Ann Rebecca "Annie" Zepp, was born 4 September 1880 in Pleasant Valley, Carroll County, Maryland.[1][2][3]

Chauncey (age 20) was already fully grown before he was included for the first time on the census in 1900, when he was a farmhand in Middleburg, Carroll County, Maryland, household of William H. Reifsnider (68, farmer).[1]

He returned to his mother's new home in Hanover, York County, Pennsylvania, by 1910. Annie (age 48, mother of three, all living) had remarried to Jacob S. Spangler (47, day laborer), who had taken in his stepsons Chauncey E. (29, drugstore salesman), William H. (27, shoe factory worker) and Charles C. Senft (25, printer in a printing office).[4]

On 12 November 1914 in Hanover, York County, he married Carrie May Sprenkle,[5] daughter of Charles Elsworth Sprenkle and Emma Elizabeth Slagle. (Chauncey's brother William Henry Senft married Carrie's sister May F. Sprenkle.) Chauncey and Carrie had two children:

When he registered for the draft in 1918, Chauncey was a married, 38-year-old shoe maker working for Sheppard & Myers in Hanover, and living there on South Franklin Street.[2] At that time he was described as of medium height and build with blue eyes and partially bald.[2]

In 1920, Chauncey E. (age 39, shoe factory pullover) and Carrie M. Senft (31) owned a house on South Franklin Street in Penn Township, York County, where they lived with their daughter Anna Elizabeth (4).[10] They were likely in the same house on South Franklin Street Extended in 1930, when the household encompassed Chauncey E. (age 49, shoe factory pullover) and Carrie M. (42), their children Anna Elizabeth (14) and Charles George Senft (8), Carrie's widowed maternal grandfather Henry Christian Slagle (92) and a widowed sister-in-law Lizzie Michael (47).[11]

Chauncey E. (59, bottom inker at shoe factory) and Carrie M. (52) were still domiciled at 528 South Franklin Street in Pennville, Penn Township, in 1940, with their son Charles G. (18, doing odd jobs at auto repair shop) and Carrie's widowed sister May F. (Sprenkle) Senft (49).[12] The record shows that Chauncey had completed six years of formal education; Carrie and her sister, seven; and Charles had finished his junior year of high school.[12]

Chauncey died 2 November 1959 in York County, and was buried there at Rest Haven Cemetery.[13]
