Biography

Elizabeth Sephton was christened on 20 Feb 1825 at St Mary the Virgin, Prescot. She was the daughter of James Sephton & Elizabeth (Knowles) Sephton. Her father's occupation was recorded in the christening record as labourer, and the family's address as Prescot.

By June 6th 1841, Elizabeth was living in Eccleston, Lancashire in the household of Robert Charnock. Robert was a farmer, and presumably Elizabeth's employer since she was a female servant. As well as Elizabeth, Robert, and Isabelle (Robert's wife) the household contained a 14-year-old boy named John Byron - possibly another farm worker though no employment is listed for him - and an agricultural labourer named Thomas Gore.

Elizabeth married Absalom Doward on 18 Feb 1849 at Christ Church in Eccleston, Lancashire. Both were of full age (21 or more), and lived in Eccleston, and neither had been married before. Absalom was a collier. Their fathers were named as William Doward (collier) and James Sephton (potter). The witnesses were Edward Foster and Mary Foster.

Occupation: Housekeeper

Research Notes

1841 census

There were several Elizabeth Sephtons born around that time in the vicinity of Prescot. One was at Huyton in 1841, with her presumed parents; she married at Huyton before 1851. A second, the daughter of William and Ellen, born in Rainford, was living with her parents in Wigan in 1841. A third, the daughter of John and Alice Sephton, was with her maternal grandparents in 1841. By elimination, the daughter of James and Elizabeth Sephton was working for Robert Charnock in 1841.
