Houses Torn Down to Make
Room for London Terrace
Mrs. Maude Sergeant BOUVIER, wife of John Vernon BOUVIER, died yesterday at their residence, 765 Park Avenue, of pneumonia, after an illness of three months and within a fortnight of her Fiftieth wedding anniversary. She was 69 years old. A daughter of William R. SERGEANT, New York importer of Scandinavian products, and of Edith Leaman SERGEANT, she was a granddaughter of Alfred V. LEAMAN, a native of York, England, who came to this city as a youth and established himself here as a merchant. Mr. LEAMAN was the original owner of the block of set back houses on the northern side of Twenty third Street, between Eighth and Ninth Avenues, the site of which is now occupied by the London Terrace Apartments. Mrs. BOUVIER, a graduate of the Brearley School, had long been a leader in the social life of the Summer colony at East Hampton, L. I., where she and her husband had maintained a country home since 1910. A life long lover of flowers and an expert in their cultivation, Mrs. BOUVIER created at their East Hampton estate on Further Lane one of the finest Italian gardens on Long Island. She was a leading spirit in the East Hampton Garden Club and won many prizes at its flower shows. Mr. BOUVIER, a retired trial lawyer, long one of the prominent members of the New York bar, is commander of the New York State Commandery of the Loyal Legion of the United States and a former general president of the General Society of the Sons of the Revolution. Besides her husband, Mrs. BOUVIER leaves a son, John V. BOUVIER 3d, and three daughters, Mrs. Edith B. BEALE, Mrs. Maude B. DAVIS and Mrs. Michelle B. SCOTT, all of this city. The funeral services will be private. [3]
