Biography

Robert Lee SESSOMS III was born 23 Oct 1935 in Raleigh Township, Wake, North Carolina, United States. He was the son of Robert Sessoms and Clarice Mitchell.

He passed away 06 Nov 2009 in Knoxville, Knox, Tennessee, United States.

Robert Lee Sessoms III, of Knoxville, TN passed away November 6, 2009. Born in Raleigh, NC October 23, 1935, he was married to Carolyn Kay Stark in 1961 until her death in 2004.

He is survived by his three children and their families: Robin and Jeff Roberts and their children Tyler and Jordan, Jami Benson and her children Elizabeth and Bennett, and Jon Sessoms, as well as his sister Elizabeth Huddleston and her family. A Chaplains Assistant in the U S Air Force, he was a graduate of UNC Chapel Hill and Southern Seminary, Bob devoted his life to ministry within the Southern Baptist Convention. He served as a minister in Fredrick, MD, Kansas City, KS, Memphis, TN, Greensboro, NC, Nashville, TN, and Knoxville TN. Much of his career was spent as a consultant for the Baptist Sunday School Board Church Recreation Department. His last position was as Recreation and Senior Adult Minister at First Baptist Concord. Bob authored 18 books, received a Church Recreation Lifetime Achievement Award, and was the first chair of the Christian Sports Recreation Minister Association. Recognized as a leader in the field, Bob used recreation as a way to minister to children, youth and adults in the churches he served and around the world. He will be missed for his creativity, sense of humor, laughter, and compassion.

Services will be held in Knoxville at First Baptist Church Concord, on Sunday, November 8, 2009. Receiving friends will take place from 3:00-4:45 p.m.Service will begin at 5:00 p.m. An additional memorial service will be held at Trinity Baptist Church in Raleigh at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Bob and Carolyn Sessoms Memorial at Trinity Baptist Church, 4604 Six Forks Rd., Raleigh, NC 27609. [1]
