Emma was born in 1856. Emma Severs ... She passed away in 1929. ^[1]

Emma Gertrude Severs, married names Mertel (1)and Rhoads(2) was born in Union Star, Breckinridge, Kentucky on April 27, 1856.(3) Emma's father, Jacob Peck Severs was age 46 and her mother, Mary Elizabeth Hurley, was 41 years old the year that Emma was born.(4) The Severs family moved to Goldendale, Washington where Emma attended a Catholic girls school and received good marks. (5) Then Emma, at age fifteen, married Edward E. Mertel, age 24, in Goldendale, WA in 1871.(6) Emma was married to Edward for nine years. During this time, the Mertel family moved to Clinton, Mo. with their three daughters.(7) Edward suddenly died in 1880 at the age of thirty-three. (8) In 1881, Emma, a widow with three children, married Issac Prairie Rhoads, a widower with three children and together they had six more children and moved back to a farm in Goldendale, Washington. (9) Emma was raising twelve children when Isaac Rhoads died leaving the family nearly destitute, (10) Emma managed to raise the twelve children by moving in with her married daughters and by hiring out as a seamstress.(11) After a busy life, Emma died on January 17, 1929, in Portland, Oregon, at the age of 72 and was buried in Goldendale, Washington.(12)^[2]
