Biography

Hannah Sewall was the daughter of Henry and Jane (Dummer) Sewall, born in Tunworth, Hampshire, England on 10 May 1649, and her birth was very helpfully recorded in Newbury, Massachusetts.^[1][2] Her brother, Samuel Sewall was known for his involvement in the Salem witch trials, and served for many years as the chief justice of the Massachusetts Superior Court of Judicature, the province's high court.

She married Jacob Toppan on 24 August 1670 in Newbury.^[3] Jacob was born on 24 December 1645 in Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts Bay Colony, the son of Abraham and Susanna (Taylor) Toppan.^[4][5]

All of Jacob's children were by this first wife. Hannah died in Newbury on 11 November 1699 aged about 50 years.^[6] Jacob married a second time, on 14 January 1705/6 in Newbury, and his second wife was confusingly also named Hannah Sewall.^[7] She was the widow of first wife Hannah's brother, John Sewall who had died in 1699.
