The son of Samuel George Sewards (1821-1907) and Frances Charlotte "Fanny" Harrison (1829-1966), Benjamin was born in Quadring, in Lincolnshire, in 1859.[1][2][3] His siblings included:

Bridge (1863-)
His mother died in 1866 and Benjamin struck off for America, arriving in 1887. He migrated to Michigan, where he met his wife, Mary Mae "Mamie" Stanard (1869-1950), the daugter of Daniel Stenard and Mary Glass. They married in Marcellus Township, in Cass County, Michigan on November 5, 1887.[4] Their children included:
Cora Mae (1891-1984)
Edna Marie (1903-1984)
Gladys Lucille (1908-2004)
George Samuel (1911-1987)
The family made their home in Newburg Township, where Benjamin homesteaded.[5] By 1910, his nephew, William Sewards, had joined him in Newburh.[6][7][8]
Mamie passed away in 1950 and, in 1951, Benjamin passed away in Porter Township, at the age of 91.[9][10] He is buried at Poe Cemetery in Jones Township, Cass County, Michigan.[11]
