Biography

Arthur was the eldest son of Robert Sewell and Marianne Seymour. He was baptised privately at Milbrooke and received into the Church at Carisbrooke on 27 November 1841.^[1][2]

Arthur was educated at St. Peter's College, Radley. He matriculated at New College, Oxford, on 19 January 1862, having gained a Choral Scholarship, which he held from 1862 to 1866. Arthur proceeded B.A. in 1866 and M.A. in 1868. He was ordained Deacon in 1866 and Priest in 1868, both by the Bishop of Worcester.^[3]

Arthur became Chaplain of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem in 1871. He was Assistant-Master at Malvern College from 1866 to 1871 and partner with Mr. E. R. C. Hays at Southleigh School, Malvern, from 1871 to 1873. From 1873 to 1878 Arthur had a boys' school at Litchford Hall, Higher Blackley, near Manchester. Litchford Hall, incidentally, is the house in which Dr. William Sewell died in 1874. Arthur was Principal of Waterloo House School, Leamington, from 1878 to 1888; Head master of Weymouth College Preparatory School from 1888 to 1905; Curate of Barwick and Holy Trinity, Hendford, from 1905. Arthur was appointed Curate of Melcombe Regis, Dorset, in 1896.^[4]

Arthur married Mary Lee Waring at St. John's Church, Redland, near Bristol, on 14 August 1876. Mary was the youngest daughter of Henry Franks and Catherine Mary (Rankin) Waring of Southcliffe, Lyme Regis, Dorsetshire.^[5][6]

Arthur passed away in 1947 aged 106.^[7][8]
