DEATH NOTICE. SEWELL.—On the 16th inst., at his residence Maplestead, John Sewell, aged 87 years.
OBITUARY. Mr. John Sewell, a very old colonist, died at his residence at Pengelly, at the ripe age of 87 years. Mr. John Sewell was born at Hadleigh Hall, Maplestead, Essex, in the year 1813, and was the eldest son of Mr. J. Sewell, of Maplestead, Essex. He came to this colony in October, 1834, in the ship Adam. He lived for one year on the Swan, and then went to St. Albyns, near Beverley, where he lived five years, during the whole of which time there was not enough rain to make the brook run. He removed to Mokine, and remained there till about 1846, when he was flooded out. He had lived at his late residence since 1862, with the exception of a few years spent in York. While there he took great interest in municipal and educational matters. He was made a Justice of the Peace in 1875. and was a member of the Beverley Roads Board for several years. He always took a great interest in politics, and, until quite recently, kept up a correspondence with prominent members of Parliament on political matters. In 1840 he married Ann Susanna Wybourne Parker, eldest daughter of the late Mr. S. Parker, of Northbourne, near York. Mrs. Sewell is still living. Mr. and Mrs. Sewell celebrated their "diamond wedding" on September 9, 1900. They had 13 children, ten of whom are living. Had Mr. Sewell lived till December 1 he would have been 88 years of age. The funeral took place on Monday last.
