Biography

Philippa / Phillip Sewell was born in Halstead, Essex, England in early 1628/9. She was baptized there on 8 March 1628/9. Her parents were George and Sarah (Unknown) Sewell. Sarah was the second wife of George Sewell. Philippa was the fifth of eleven children that George had with Sarah.[1]

George Sewell's will was dated 28 August 1643 and proved 30 May 1644. Philippa was one of 11 surviving siblings when her father died. In his will George gave to his six daughters by his current wife "all my lands and tenements in Twinstead in the County of Essex", his wife to enjoy the profits of the lands and tenements until his daughters "arrive at the age of 24 or be married".[1].

Philippa first appears in New England in a 23 November 1647 record, married to Francis Wainwright. They are engaging a William Norton to help them secure Philippa's legacy:

  • "23. (9) 1647. ffrancis Wainewright & Phillip his wife of Ipswich in N: England. did constitute Wm Norton Merchant theire lawful Attorney to recover and receive for them a Legacie given the said Phillip by the last will and testamt of Georg Sewell of Hasted in the County of Essex deceased wth power to compound sue acquit & generally all acts concerning the prmisses. also to receive Rents & sell or alien such lands as are given to the sd Phillip by her said father Georg Sewell. Ratifying irrevocably whatsoever shalbe by him so done. Unto wch (bearing date 20th November 1647)."[2].

No immigration records have been found for Philippa, but it is likely that she came to New England as a servant, as she does not appear to have had any near Sewell kin in Ipswich or Boston, and no New England kin are mentioned in her father's rather detailed will. (A Henry Sewall came over in 1635 from Lancashire and soon removed from Ipswich to Newbury; no known relation).

Philippa married Francis Wainwright by November 1647, based on the notarial record cited above, almost certainly in Ipswich[3]. Torrey's references: "WAINWRIGHT, Francis (-1692) & 1/wf Phillippa [SEWALL] (-1669); by 1648; Ipswich {Sibley's Harv. Grad. 3:350; GDMNH 708; Reg. 67:269; Hammatt: Ipswich 388-9; Bancroft etc. 88; Davis-Bancroft 48; Cogswell 24; EIHC 4:188}".

Francis and Phillippa had children, all born in Ipswich[4]:

  1. John (ca 1648), married Elizabeth Norton in 1674[5]
  2. Sarah (ca 1650), married Jacob Perkins in 1667[6]
  3. Jacob (ca 1652), probable son, served under Lathrop Feb 1675, killed by Indians in 1675[7]
  4. Mary (ca 1657 - ae 53 at death in 1710), married Jeremiah Shepherd 1676, [8].
  5. Martha (1658)[9], married Joseph Proctor
  6. Simon (1660)[10], married Sarah Gilbert (against Francis' wishes)
  7. Mehitable (1662)[11], married John Atwater
  8. Francis (1664)[12], married Sarah Whipple
  9. Benjamin (1666-1686)[13]
  10. Elizabeth (1668)[14], married Jonathan Cogswell

Phillippa died on 6 October 1669, in Ipswich[15], leaving Francis with several very young children.

Francis soon married Hannah (Unknown)[3]. They had no known children together, and she outlived him. Francis was living in Ipswich, but he died suddenly on 19 May 1692 while on business in Salem[16].

Elizabeth French (1913) gave the surname as Sewell. Would seem the profile was created with LNAB Sewell; it was changed to Sewall as a result of a later merge. --Gene

I agree; the LNAB change should also be reflected in the profile text, and in her father's LNAB, as well as in Francis' profile.

We need someone to watch over her profile, Greg. Doesn't seem there are any active WikiTreers reporting as profile managers. --Gene

Pease add me as a PM and I will make the changes. There is some information on her paternal line, so please add me to those profiles as well, if no one on the English side is interested in managing them.
