Catherine was born in 1865 in Ahey Bridge in Knockanalban, County Clare, Ireland, the daughter of Patrick Sexton and Catherine Darcy. Her father died when Bridget was about eight or nine years old. Her mother remarried in 1874. Her older sister Bridget emigrated to South Australia in 1881, and sponsored Catherine to follow her in 1883. Catherine was accompanied by her younger sister, Ellen. Five years later in 1888, Catherine married George Frederick Smith there in Adelaide. They settled initially in Eurelia, well north of Adelaide, where they started a family that would total seven children, one of whom died young. In about 1897, they moved to Moonta Bay, and a couple of years later to the Adelaide Port area in Adelaide. Catherine died there in 1938 at the age of 72.
