Biography

Henry Seymour was born about 1637, the fifth son of Sir Edward Seymour Bt. and his wife, Anne Portman. [1]

His first wife was Penelope Haslewood, daughter of Sir William Haslewood of Maidwell in Northamptonshire. [1] They had no children. [1]

Henry was first returned to Parliament in 1679 as member for St Mawes. Thereafter he seems to have had no trouble being re-elected to a variety of seats until well into his old age. [2] [3] [4][5]

He assumed the name of Portman in 1690 on succeeding to the estates of his cousin, Sir William Portman. [1]

On the 31st of July 1714 when he was 77 years old he married Meliora Fitch daughter of John Fitch, a grocer of London. [1] Again there were no children. [1]

Henry died on the 23rd of February 1728. [1]
