Biography

Elizabeth Shackelford was born 29 Nov 1768[1] in the Colony of Virginia. She was the daughter of the Revolutionary War soldier William Shackleford and Rebecca Cook.[2] She married a German immigrant Josef Witner (Joseph Whitner) at the age of 21 in 1789 in the Pendleton District of South Carolina.[3] They are both on the 1790 census of the Pendleton District without any children and two slaves.[4] On the 1800 census they are still in the Pendleton District with 5 children and 7 slaves.[5] All six of there children are present in 1810 with a few more help and again 7 slaves.[6] In 1820 there are three daughters left at home and 18 slaves.[7] Joseph, Elizabeth's husband dies in 1824, and leaves her to take care of the plantation. In 1826 Pendleton District is dissolved, and two new districts, Anderson and Pickens, are formed. On the 1830 census in Anderson District, Elizabeth is about 62 years old and still has one daughter with her at home, along with 12 slaves.[8] Elizabeth Whitner died 24 Oct 1837 and is buried along with her husband in The Old Stone Church Cemetery in Clemson, Pickens County, South Carolina, USA.[1]
