Biography

Jacob born on August 7, 1762 in Wurttemberg, Germany and a son of Frantz Francis Shaffer and Anna Elizabeth Kiehl. He came to America with his parents about 1772 and settled in the Stone Valley area of Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. On August 14, 1787, he purchased 140 acres of land in Mahanoy Township, from his father for five pounds. This land had been surveyed to Frantz Shaffer in 1785. Jacob was not assessed for this land until several years later. He appears on Tax Lists for Mahanoy Township beginning in 1786, when he is listed as being single.> In1793 he had 100 acres, 1794, his possessions included a horse and a cow, and in1796, was living next to his mother, Elizabeth and had 150 acres of land, a log house, a barn, two horses and two cows. During the remainder of his life he was assessed for varying amounts of land. Jacob married Maria Margaretha Lenker about 1788 in Pennsylvania. In 1790, he had 50 acres of land and was listed on the 1790 Federal Census, In 1802, he had 200 acres of land , a two story house and barn, plus two horses and a cow. By 1808, he was assessed for 150 acres of his own land, plus 200 acres of land which belonged to Conrad Beates.

Married: in 1788 to Maria Margaretha Lenker, died: 1830, a two story house and barn, plus two horses and a cow. Letters of Administration were granted to Michael Shaffer and Margaret Shaffer of Lower Mahanoy Township after Jacob Conrad died. They were issued October 22, 1822. After Margaret died, letters were filed on January 26, 1881, naming all their children: Michael - Ann Elisabeth - Jacob Conrad, Jr. - Anna Mary - Juliana - Catherine - Francis - Solome - Benjamin - Daniel and Jonathan. Jacob Conrad Shaffer was named Assessor for Mahanoy Township in 1815. [2] The 1820 U. S. Federal Census shows that Jacob lived in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania nearly his whole life.

He passed away on September 11, 1822 and buried in the Stone Valley Cemetery in Hickory Corners, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. [3]

His tombstone reads: Hier Ruhet Jacob Conrad Schaffer, sohn von Frantz U Elisabeth Shaffer, geboren den 7th August 1762, starb den 11th Septr 1822, was alt 60 Yahr 2m d4. [4]
