James Paden Shaffer was the third child of Jacob Shaffer and his wife Mary Kennedy. As the family resided in Westmoreland County circa 1795-1808, it is the most likely place of birth. He appears in the 1830 federal census of Beaver County Pennsylvania adjacent mother Catherine (Kennedy) Shaffer and in 1840 census of the same county. [1]
In the 1850 Census of South Slippery Rock Township, Lawrence, Pennsylvania, we find James Shaffer age 48 enumerated with his wife Magdalene age 44 and the following children: Abraham age 19; John 17; James 15; William 13 and Elizabeth 10. Other researchers have three additional children not in the home in 1850: Jacob Clingensmith Shaffer, Esther Shaffer Hoge and Mary Ann Shaffer. [2]
