Biography
James Paden Shaffer was the third child of Jacob Shaffer and his wife Mary Kennedy. As the family resided in Westmoreland County circa 1795-1808, it is the most likely place of birth. He appears in the 1830 federal census of Beaver County Pennsylvania adjacent mother Catherine (Kennedy) Shaffer and in 1840 census of the same county. [1]
In the 1850 Census of South Slippery Rock Township, Lawrence, Pennsylvania, we find James Shaffer age 48 enumerated with his wife Magdalene age 44 and the following children: Abraham age 19; John 17; James 15; William 13 and Elizabeth 10. Other researchers have three additional children not in the home in 1850: Jacob Clingensmith Shaffer, Esther Shaffer Hoge and Mary Ann Shaffer. [2]
Proof of father in Indenture, Quit Claim, of Beaver County, Pennsylvania dated 22 February 1838 Between James Shaffer and Leana his wife and Abraham Shaffer. Property description one tenth of east half of Lot 98 in the first district of donation lands, James Shaffer heir of the late Jacob Shaffer. [3]
