William Shand was born in Scotland.

Biography

Captain William Shand was Killed in Action in France on 25 Jul 1916 during World War I.

William was born in 1881^[1]. He was the son of John Shand and Grace Cowan.

In 1891 he was living with his parents at the Caledonian Hotel, 54-56 Bannatyne St., Lanark^[2].

On 25 Oct 1898 he registered as a medical student^[3].

In 1901 he was lodging at 70 Park Rd., Kelvin, Glasgow^[4].

He received his medical degree in 1903.

He married Gertrude Mary Way in 1908 in Salford, Lancashire^[5].

In 1911 he is shown practising as a doctor in Salford, Lancashire, and living at 271 Regent Road, Salford^[6].

He became an army doctor in the Royal Army Medical Corps and held the rank of Captain in the Lancashire Fusiliers. See https://www.ramc-ww1.com/. He was killed in action in France on 25 Jul 1916^[7] .

After he was killed in action on 25 Jul 1916, a letter (shown below) dated 28th July 1916 was sent to the parents of his medical orderly, Private Kaufman. Doctor Shand is mentioned, and the account states that he was killed on the night of 24 Jul 1916. The official report of his death must have been filed on the 25th.
