Richard Cowan Shand was born in 1889/90. He was the son of John Shand and Grace Cowan. His parents were the managers of the Caledonian Hotel, which was on Bannatyne Street (Nos 54 & 56) in Lanark.
In the official records he appears only three times, in the Scotland Census of 1891[1] and 1901[2] and in the Scotland Probate Index of 1913[3], which records his death in Brazil. His absence from the Scotland records at the time of the 1911 Census suggests he was out of the country at the time.
He passed away on 13 May 1913 in Manaus, Brazil. He was about 23. There are no records to indicate whether he married. It is unlikely that he did.
