Eleanor is the daughter of Aaron Shank and Marion Riddle.
She was named after her father's mother, (Nellie).
Eleanor grew up in a number of places, including at 216 Leopard Road in Paoli, PA at the home of her paternal grandparents, and in New York City with her mother.
For a time, she went to The Professional Children's School.
Eleanor danced at the Roxy, was a Roxyette (not to be confused with a Rockette). She toured with Red Skelton. When she married Hal Young, in 1944, she joined the WACs and moved to Washington, DC until the end of WWII.
She loved theater and was an avid reader. She was a very good cook. She painted, and preferred abstract art. She made jewelry.
She died of lung cancer, after a lifetime of heavy smoking. Her ashes were scattered in the field near the family home, which was at 11513 Colt Terrace in Silver Spring (Wheaton) MD.
