Biography

Mary, daughter of Willm. Shanks & Ann, was born on 15 March 1803 and baptised in April 1803 in Marylebone, London, England.^[1]

Mary married Thomas Rutherford on 31 October 1824 in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, England.^[2] They had five children in 14 years.

In the 1841 census Mary (age 37, not b in Northumberland) was on Church Street, Berwick upon Tweed, Northumberland, England.^[3] In the 1851 census Mary (age 47, b Berwick) was the wife of Thomas Rutherford on Church Street, Berwick, Northumberland, England.^[4] In the 1861 census Mary (age 57, b London) was the wife of Thos Rutherford in East Greenwich, London, England.^[5]

Mary's death (age 69) was registered in the Jul-Aug-Sep quarter of 1873 in the Berwick district.^[6]. She was buried in Berwick-upon-Tweed Cemetery, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland Unitary Authority, Northumberland, England with a death date of 13 September 1873.^[7]

Research Notes

I cannot find a source to connect Mary to the father that is attached to her profile, Robert Shanks (1763-), whereas her baptism record shows her parents were William and Ann (see above) Humphrey-6461 09:56, 13 July 2023 (UTC)

Find a Grave source lists her as Mary Wood Shanks Rutherford - on the gravestone she is referred to as Mary Wood, wife of Thomas Rutherford. I haven't seen Wood as a middle name on any other sources.

Unsourced - After the death of Thomas in 1867 she married Timothy Wood the following year. He was 11 years older than Mary and he died in 1871 2 years before Mary died in1873. The marriage and deaths occurred at Berwick. Possible census record for this family in 1871^[8] needs more research
