Elizabeth was almost 12 yrs. old when her mother passed away. It was her duty to care for the younger children when not attending school for the few short months that school was held. She told of swinging the children on wild grape vines, and how one broke, dropping one of the smaller boys in the creek. She went to live with her Aunt Mary Shanks Lenon Cline until her father married again, and in the spring of 1853 the family loaded their wagons and headed farther west, finally settling in the sparsely settled community of Panora, Guthrie Co, Iowa. Here she grew to womanhood and became engaged to George Campbell but they quarreled and he joined the Union Army soon after the outset of the war.
