Samuel was born after 1727 in Sadsbury, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He died in 1811 in Tennessee.
Samuel was buried, not in a cemetery, on the banks of the Cumberland River, Whites Creek, Davidson, Tennessee, exact location unknown.
Excerpt from Dexal R. Shannon's book "Shannon" December 1990:
Samuel was born about 1727 or 1729, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He was married in 1750 to Jean Reid.
Her parents were John Reid and Jane Stewart, who came from Delaware. They lived in Sadsbury Township, Pennsylvania. John Reid died in 1752. Jean Shannon is believed to be the sister of John Shannon's wife, Sarah Reid (see A2) [note that John is Samuel's brother].
Jean died in 1808 or 1806. She was b: circa 1730 in DEL. Samuel and Jean has at least 11 children who are listed as B1 thru B11.
Samuel and Jean lived in Montgomery, Amherst and Bland County, Virginia. Samuel and a son, Thomas Shannon, built "Poplar Hill", circa 1774, as a residence and as of 1977, it was still standing in the town bearing its name -- Poplar Hill, Virginia. The town is located near Walker's Creek in SW Virginia. Samuel was reported to have been very active in civil affairs in the Bland County, Virginia area.
In approximately 1784, he and his family move to Cumberland Settlement, Davidson County, Tennessee (present day site of Nashville, Tennessee). There is a land transaction in Deed Book A, Sumner County Court Records, Gallatin, Tennessee, involving Samuel Shannon. The transaction was made prior to 1797. Samuel is listed on the Tax Rolls of Davidson County, Tennessee for the year of 1787.
Samuel died on October 4, 1811, seven miles NW of Nashville, Tennessee.
SAMUEL'S Last Will and Testament, dated Jan 22 1808, on file in Nashville, TN, is set forth below:
"SAMUEL SHANNON, his Last Will and Testament, Recorded Nov 26 1811"
In the name of God, Amen. I SAMUEL SHANNON, of Davidson County and State of Tennessee, now being of sound mind and understanding, first it is my will and I do order that all my debts and funeral expenses be paid and satisfied as soon as conveniently can be done after my decease.
Item First, as to my worldly possessions and estate, I will and bequeath the tract of land that I now live on to my two daughters, SASAH SHANNON (see B5) and ESTHER SHANNON (see B9), to be equally divided between them and their heirs forever.
Item Second, I will and bequeath all my personal estate except one bay mare, to my two daughters, SARAH SHANNON and ESTHER SHANNON
Item Third, I will and bequeath the above except one bay mare to SAMUEL SHANNON (see C2), son of DAVID SHANNON (see B1), to proper use and Interest.
This being my Last Will and Testament, I hereby appoint my son, DAVID SHANNON and JOHN MOTHEHAL, my Executors. In Testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 22nd day of Jan 1808. Signed, sealed, and delivered in the presence of SALLY SHANNON and DAVID SHANNON. (Note: JOHN MOTHERAL was probably the father-in-law of SAMUEL SHANNON, JR.)

One more thing...I don't believe this man was the "Captain Samuel Shannon" who fought in the Revolution. He would have been rather old for that. This man had a nephew Samuel Shannon, son of his brother John. I started a profile for him today. The military records are hard to sort out (I think there were a couple of different Samuel Shannons in Pennsylvania during the period) but based on the nephew's grave stone, he was the Captain.
You're right about being old. When I first did my search for my 1776 patriotic ancestors, he was outside my search criteria due to age, so I did not add him until recently. Probably his nephew.
One more comment for today. I have looked and can find no documentation of the 1750 marriage in Rockfish, Virginia. According to Google, that is 288 miles from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Jane's father died in Lancaster County in 1752. Samuel was still in Lancaster County as late as 1779 (according to one record on Ancestry; I see that is contradicted by the Dexal Shannon book, but nevertheless I think it unlikely that Jane would have got married to far from her home).
I don't think Samuel could have been born as late as 1727. When his father wrote his will in 1737, he listed five children. Samuel and his brother John (who was appointed executor) inherited land. The will specifically states that the three younger siblings (Margaret, Thomas, and Anna) were not of age, implying that Samuel was an adult.
P.S. I have suggested an edit of the birth date to FindAGrave.
There is no evidence that this man's father was William Shannon. One source cited here (although not necessarily reliable) names his father as Thomas. This man should be detached from the father shown and then merged with Shannon-80 as has been previously proposed.
I think someone besides me rejected the merge last year. I rarely reject merges, and one guy's reason for it being wrong seemed strange. The father was part of my initial round of gedcom imports.
Thank you for responding. If you agree with my comment, please detach the father (unless you have evidence he should stay), and then I think the merge can go forward.
I think the other Samuel has a wrong father attached, and I have left a comment on the profile to that effect. I think the father should be detached and then the merge done.
Oh, sorry, my mistake. I think Shannon-4143 is a whole different person. I have detached him from Jane and left a research note on his profile explaining why. But this profile needs to be merged with Shannon-4203 as soon as the father on 4203 is corrected.
P.S. There are also duplicate wives, and I have proposed a merge for them.
Samuel was an adult in 1737 when he inherited property from his father. See the will at the father's profile; it gives land to John and Samuel and notes that the three younger children are not "of age."
Shannon-1226 and Shannon-80 appear to represent the same person because: Same parents, same DOB and DOD, places of birth and death, siblings - all the same. Only difference is one profile includes spouse and children.
Shannon-1226 and Shannon-80 are not ready to be merged because: On Shannon-80 , you show his father to be William McGREGOR
[b.1700] & Molly Unknown b.1719
1st of all should NOT Samuel's father's last name be SHANNON ??
2nd if "Molly" is correct, showing bc1719, she would be only
8 [eight] yrs old & having Samuel
