Ralph was born in rural Beaverhead County, Montana in 1896 to Joel Glover Shannon and Alpha Rosalie "Rose" Arnold and was baptised in the Presbyterian Church in Dillon, MT. He was the last of four children. [1]
In 1918, Ralph registered for the draft for WWI.[2]
About 1920, Ralph married Rita Shannon, and had two daughters, Cecile b. 1922, and Gloria b. 1924. Ralph and Rita were divorced about 1939 after Ralph's "desertion" of the family. He apparently had a girlfriend. About 1939, Ralph married Billie Ray.
