Biographical notes as of 1933

The following which was supplied by the political party, the Liberal and Country League, was published in several South Australian newspapers including The Chronicle on 26 January 1933 under the heading - "LIBERAL AND COUNTRY LEAGUE NOTES. Sketches Of Candidates For State Elections"[3]

MR. H. H. SHANNON (MURRAY)
Mr Howard Huntley Shannon, of Bridegwater, was born at Maitland in 1892, being the youngest son of the late ex-Senator J. W. Shannon, a stanch Liberal who served Yorke Peninsula in the House of Assembly before he was chosen to represent the State in the Senate. His grandparents, the late Abraham Shannon, of Duck Ponds, Moculta. and Solomon Moody, of Eowrie. Kilkerran, were two of the State's pioneers, both of whom came from the North of Ireland in the early days of the colony.
Mr. Shannon was educated at Prince Alfred College, and entered his late father's auctioneering business in 1910 upon-leaving college, being taken into partnership in- the firm of J. W. Shannon & Co. a few years later. Shortly after the outbreak of the Great War, Mr. Shannon volunteered for active service, but was rejected on account, of defective sight, and the same result followed two later efforts to join his comrades overseas.
In 1926 Mr Shannon gained a seat on the board of the S.A. Farmers' Co-operative Union Limited, defeating what was considered to have been one of the strongest fields that have contested that board. As a member of the Glenelg Corporation, Mr. Shannon has had first-hand experience in local government. He is an ex-president of the Glenelg branch of the Liberal Federation, and is the president of the Bridgewater branch of the Liberal and Country League. His interests are bound up with the man on the land, and he is a whole-hearted supporter of primary industries. Like his late father, Mr. Shannon is an excellent judge of stock, his services having been sought for many leading country shows to adjudicate in the horse sections.
