Biography

Mary Elizabeth “Bettie” Sharp and her twin brother John William Sharp was born in Owen County, Kentucky on September 23, 1851.

Mary Elizabeth went by the name Bettie.

She married John Terry on October 30; 1876.

Bettie died on December 10, 1913, and is buried in the Luttrell Cemetery, Owen County, KY as is her husband.

Research Notes

There is a difference between the Kentucky Death Certificate which states she died on 10 Dec 1913 as opposed to the headstone saying 16 Dec 1913. The Headstone is wrong, the Find A Grave Memorial is only using the data it has on the headstone. I'm using the certified death date by the state certificate. Kentucky Death Records, source number 9 below.

Please note that his last name is misspelled on his headstone (Teary). John was born in 1856 and died February 22, 1928. Together they had one son, George Thomas Terry, born October 1, 1876. The 1900 census reveals that George was living at home with his parents in 1900 and that Bettie’s brother Joseph Tandy Sharp was also living with them. They also had a lodger named Lucy Parker (age 11) was living with them. Lucy’s mother had passed away when she was only two and I believe it was not uncommon for a child in that situation to be taken in as a lodger in return for help around the house. On November 28, 1906 at the age of 17 she married George and together they had 7 children, all girls. George died June 14, 1953. Lucy who was born on March 14, 1889 died on October 17, 1969. They are both interred in the Owenton IOOF Cemetery. George Terry’s headstone reflects that he was born in 1877 but all other sources have his birth year as being 1876.
