Robert was born in 1823.
He married Sarah Sellers in 1849.[1]
He abandoned his family in 1878 and his wife Sarah sued him under the "Destitute Persons Relief Ordinance" for support. Defendant was ordered to pay 1 pound a week towards maintenance of his wife and 7 shillings a week or each of his two children. [2]
He left Nelson for Australia leaving his family to survive without him.
On Thursday last, Mr Bunny made on application at this Court on behalf of Mrs Robert Sharp, whose husband left her in 1878, for an order to obtain the value of a horse which her husband had left in the district. It appeared that application had been made to the Resident Magistrate shortly after Sharp had deserted his wife for a maintenance order and on October 22 1878, Lowthar Broad Esq., R.M., had made an order that Robert Sharp should contribute a pound per week to his wife and 7s per week to each of his two children; but in consequence of him having left this Colony for Australia no action could be taken upon the order. Mr Touet now gave evidence that the man had left a horse at Stanley Brook which the deponent valued at 14 pounds, and thereupon his Worship made an order under the Destitute Persons Relief Ordinance, 1877, for the sale of the horse, the proceeds therefrom to be handed to Mrs Sharp [3]
He passed away in 1883.[4]
