Biography

Elizabeth Sharp was born January 26, 1790, in what would be called "Sharpsburg" in Bath county, Kentucky. She is the daughter of Moses Sharp and Elizabeth Walker.

  • Revolutionary War veteran Moses Sharp settled in the area in 1780 and laid out the town of Bloomfield on his land in 1814. After his death in 1820, the town received its first post office; since "Bloomfield" was preempted by another community, the postmaster named his station after Sharp, and the town was established and incorporated under this new name. [1]

Moses Sharp is DAR Ancestor #A102964 [2] Bible Records were found in the Revolutionary War Pension Record of Moses Sharp born 2 May 1757 in Cumberland County, Virginia. His pension number is W3047.

About 1809, in Wayne, Virginia, Elizabeth married Dr. James McGinnis, born 1785, in Bath county, Virginia, a son of James McGinnis and Sarah Davis. James' father is a veteran of the American Revolutionary War and is honored by the Daughters of the American Revolution as DAR Ancestor#A076996. Applications for membership in the Society of the DAR have been made by the descendants Dr. James McGinnis and Elizabeth Sharp. Descendants of this family are eligible to join the National Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution. [3]

Elizabeth and James are found on the United States Census of 1850, living in Trouts Hill, Wayne county, Virginia with six children in the household. [4] On the 1860 census, Elizabeth is 70 year of age, born in Kentucky, and James is 75, born in Virginia. All of their children were born in Virginia. [5]
