Biography

Grace Sharp was born in Leslie, Fife, Scotland to James and Margaret (Beveridge) Sharp. [1]

See Research Notes below for discussion of her father. Her birth date has not been discovered but must have been 1818 or earlier based on her marriage date of 1836. [2] In census and death records her birth year is shown as 1816 to 1822. The average is 1818 which seems to be a reasonable estimate.

Grace's father was a slater, a person who installs slate roofs. [1]

Grace married George Marshall 11 Nov 1836 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland where he was living at the time [2] after posting banns in Cupar, Fife, Scotland where she lived. [3] George was an engine fitter.

Grace and George had children:

  • Margaret Marshall,
  • John Marshall,
  • Janet Marshall,
  • Robert Marshall,
  • William Marshall,
  • George Marshall,
  • Grace Marshall.[4]

Grace and her family moved frequently around Scotland.

Her first child, Margaret, was born in Barony, a section of Glasgow, in 1837. [5] John was born 1840 in Leslie, Fife where his mother, Grace, was born. By the 1841 census George and Grace were in Pathhead, Fife [6] and daughter Janet was born there in 1842. In 1849 Robert was born in England, according to the census records. [7] William was born 1851 in Arbroath. [7] Son George was born 1853 in Perth and daughter Grace was born 1857 in Arbroath. [8] The family was still in Arbroath for the 1861 census, living a few blocks from the train station and rail yards, [4] but in Perth by 1871. [9] Grace stayed in Perth the rest of her life, again living a few blocks from the train station and rail yards where George probably worked.

Grace was occupied as a nurse in 1851. [7]

By 1881 Grace and George were alone in the house, [10] again in 1891, [11] and Grace died in 1899, [1] two years after George. [12]

Research Notes

We know from Grace's death record[1] that she was born in Leslie, Fife, that her father was William Sharp, a slater, and that her mother was Margaret Beverage. No birth or marriage record has been found for Grace's parents anywhere in Scotland. No birth record has been found for Grace, either. About that time there do not seem to have been any Beverages in Leslie, but there had been Beveridges for a hundred years. The only Margaret Beveridge having children in Leslie at the appropriate time was one married to James Sharp. It is likely that Grace's death record was in error in regard to her father's given name. The informant was her son-in-law, who may have never met Grace's father. The death records for Grace's sisters, Elizabeth and Catherine, say their father was James Sharp, slater. Descendants of Grace have DNA matches to descendants of Elizabeth and Catherine. Unfortunately, no birth record has been found for Grace with her father as James, either.
