They came west. in 1848 via the steamer Griffith, landing at Sheboygan June 6 of that year. In 1850, he made a trip overland to California meeting with some rough experiences. He returned to Sheboygan in 1853 and two years later moved to Elkhart Lake and settled on a beautiful spot overlooking the lake where, with his family, he continued to reside until death. Mrs. Sharpe, who has been his devoted wife for 63 years past still survives him. Peter Sharpe was the oldest of a family of 14 children, six boys and eight girls, all of whom were married.
For many years past, Sharpe's has been a popular summer resort for those desiring a a quiet and comfortable homelike place where they might enjoy rural. life together with delightful boating and fishing. Mr. Sharpe was a man of strong constitution and enjoyed good health almost to the last, but he recently suffered an attack of pneumonia, that was followed a week ago Saturday by a stroke of apoplexy which hastened his death. He was an eccentric but jovial character and enjoyed conversing with the numerous guests who came from all parts of the country.
The Hon. T. C. Sharpe, son of the deceased, who has always resided on the old homestead, and with his wife looked after the welfare of the guests, still remains there. Mrs. J. L. Santee, the only other child of deceased, resides at Plymouth [Wisconsin].
It was the request of the deceased that when he should die that he be buried on the old homestead he loved so well. Consequently, on Thursday past, all that was mortal of Peter Sharpe was laid at rest as directed."[5]
Mr. and Mrs. Peter Sharpe moved to Sheboygan in 1848. They lived in a house near the central fire station on New York Avenue until Mr. Sharpe [Terrett C. Sharpe] became quite a boy and then his mother insisted that they leave the city and take up their residence in the country. . .The Gold Rush of 1849 took the elder Sharpe to California. He did well in his travels, coming home a few years later with gold nuggets and other valuables obtained on the trip worth approximately $10,000. With this money he bought the present Sharpe homestead, then in the wilderness, with Milwaukee the closest railroad station. Only a trail led to this city [Sheboygan] then. The property consisted of eighty acres. That was the ideal spot for Mrs. Sharpe. . .they moved out there in the spring of 1856.
Peter Sharpe built a small hotel on the property. . . a two days' journey 'with horses and wagon to Sheboygan over the crude trails of those days. [6]
