Biography

George Scherp has German Roots.

Jurge / Jurjen / Georg Emmerich Scherp, Revolutionary War Veteran, son of Georg Emmerich Scherp and Anna Barbara Schmidt, was born in Germantown, Columbia county, New York; he was baptised on 28 September 1735 at the Lutheran Church in Loonenburg, Athens, Greene county, New York.

Jurge, Jurjen, and Georg are German variants of the same name: in English George. His original surname Scherp was later anglicised to Sharp(e).

In 1748 the name Jurg Emerich Scherp is recorded on a New York City church membership list. [1]

He wed Catharina Fliegring on 28 October 1756 in Albany, Albany, New York Colony. According to several sources, to this marriage were born the following children:

  1. Jurrie George Scharp, bapt. 28 May 1758–1845;
  2. Catharina (Scharp) Bloemendal, bapt. 13 Jun 1761–1830;
  3. Jacob Georg Scherp (Scharp, Sharp), bapt. 19 Jun 1763-died 6 Jul 1851; [2]
  4. Maria Marytje Scharp, bapt. 3 May 1766–1830;
  5. Barbara (Scharp) Bloemendaal, b. 20 Apr 1768-1835; [3] [4]
  6. Christina Scharp, b. 29 Sep 1770–1841;
  7. Magdalena Sharp, 1774–1843;
  8. Jeremiah Sharp, 1776–;
  9. Nicholas Sharp, 1779–1812;
  10. Conrad Sharp, 1779–1861.

Jurge Scherp (George Sharpe) died on 26 January 1815 in Greenbush, Rensselaer county, New York, and was buried probably at the Family Cemetery, Edwards Road, North Greenbush, Rensselaer, New York. [5]

George Sharp left a last will and testament which was probated on 18 November 1815 in Rensselaer County, New York. [6]

Sharpe-256 and Scherp-93 appear to represent the same person because: They are the same person with all the data the same except the last name at birth. The last name listed on his marriage certificate is Scherp but later documents are Sharp or Sharpe
I inherited Sharpe-256. Since Scherp is the earliest attested surname (on the marriage record, as you write), and certainly the authentic original German spelling, SCHERP should be his Surname at Birth, with SHARPE as an alternative spelling, even though Sharpe-256 is the much older profile, by ten years. But the older biography cannot be lost, and should be kept in the merged profile. The biography at the newer profile seems to be an automatically generated biography, such as at Ancestry family trees. His christian name knows the variants Jurjen, Jurge, Georg, and the anglicised George. They can all be included under Other Names. I truly do not know which of the several variants of his christian name to put first: probably it doesnot matter.
