James was born in North Carolina in 1824. He was the son of James Archer Sharpe Sr. and Margaret Joyce. In 1845 James married Mary Ann Llewellyn and together they were parents of fourteen children. They farmed in Rockingham County then by 1860 had moved to Wilkes County. In 1863 James enlisted as a Private in the Confederate Army, Co. B 55th North Carolina Infantry. He was promoted to Corporal, fought, was wounded and served time as a Prisoner of War. They last settled and farmed in Caldwell County North Carolina where James passed away in 1901 at age 77.

Copied from findagrave site, contributed by family descendants: James Sharpe served in the Civil War. Official records have James A. Sharp, from Wilkes Co., N.C., enlisted in Co. B, 55th North Carolina Infantry as a private on April 5, 1863 at the age of 32. He was injured and hospitalized on June 4, 1863 at Richmond, Virginia and to duty returned on June 23, 1863. He became a prisoner of war on July 14, 1863 at Falling Waters, Maryland. On July 16, 1863, he was confined at Old Capitol Prison, Washington, DC. James was transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland on August 8, 1863, paroled on March 3, 1864 at Point Lookout, Maryland and exchanged on 06 March 1864 at City Point, Virginia. He once again became a POW on March 31, 1865 at Hatcher's Run, Virginia. and was once again confined at Point Lookout, MD on April 2, 1865. He took the Oath of Allegiance on June 20, 1865 at Point Lookout.
Wife Mary Ann in the 1900 Census gave their number of children as eleven but info written in on findagrave site by family descendants list number of children as fourteen.
