CPT Elam Sharpe
ELAM SHARPE JR. (b. May 10, 1821 Pendleton, SC—d. Nov 24, 1888 Dallas, TX), the son of Elam Sharpe Sr. and Elizabeth Miller, married November 22, 1844, to FRANCES HENRIETTA HAYNE, (b.
July 1, 1818 Charleston—d. Jan 8, 1875 Dallas, TX), daughter of Robert Young Hayne and Frances Henrietta Pinckney. Robert Hayne was a U.S. Senator, governor, lawyer, and statesman of SouthCarolina. He was a member of the South Carolina State Legislature, then Speaker, then Attorney
General.
Colonel Elam Sharpe was in Hampton’s Brigade in the Civil War, wounded in action and honourably discharged. He sold his holdings in South Carolina, moving to Texas where he was a Presbyterian minister.
Married Frances Hayne Nov 22, 1844
1880 Census shows Elam as a widower
Elam and Frances built a plantation home in Tamassee, SC. The land was a wedding gift to them from Frances’ father. They subsequently joined Bethel Presbyterian Church where Elam served as a ruling elder. The Sharpe’s sold their Tamassee plantation, 4900 acres, to Christopher Jones for fifty thousand dollars in gold, which Elam turned in for Confederate money to show his loyalty. This was a huge mistake, however, as they lost most everything. The family moved to Alabama and then to Dallas, Texas, where Elam became a Presbyterian minister.[1]
