James Sharpe (aka Sharp) was born in 1822 in Stoke Doyle OR Barnwell, Northamptonshire, England to John Sharpe and Charlotte (Throssel) Sharpe. He was christened on 13 Oct 1822 at St Rumbold in Stoke Doyle.[1][2]
In 1841 James Sharp (age 15-19) lived at Church Street in Barnwell St Andrew with his father John (45-49, Shepherd), mother Charlotte (45-49), and four siblings: John (12), Uriah (10), Hannah (8), and Sophia (3).[3]
James Sharpe (of full age, Bachelor, Labourer, residing at Eye, son of John Sharpe, Butcher) and Elizabeth Deboo (of full age, Spinster, residing at Eye, daughter of James Deboo, Musician) were married on 27 Aug 1844 at St Matthew in Eye, Northamptonshire - the witnesses were James Deboo & Elizabeth Burbidge.[4] The marriage was registered in Peterborough, Northamptonshire in the third quarter of the year.[5]
James and Elizabeth had ten children:
Charles Sharpe (1845-1912)
Caroline Sharpe (1847-) [birth registered as Charlotte, christened as Caroline]
Henry Sharpe (c1866-) [no birth registration located]
In 1851 James Sharpe (age 28, Butcher) lived at Main Street in Eye with his wife Elizabeth (26) and three children: Caroline (4), Emma (2), and James (4 months).[6] Their other son, Charles (6, Scholar), was staying with James' parents John & Charlotte Sharp in Barnwell St Andrew.
In 1861 James Sharp (age 38, Butcher Master) lived at Main Street in Eye with his wife Elizabeth (36, Butcher Wife) and six children: Charles (16, Scholar), Caroline (14, Scholar), James (10, Scholar), Thomas (6, Scholar), Emma (3), and Joseph (2), as well as visitor Ann R Burlison (40, Joiners Wife).[7]
In 1871 James Sharpe (age 48, Butcher) lived at Main Street in Eye with his wife Elizabeth (46) and three children: Thomas (17, Butcher's Son), Joseph (11, Scholar), and Henry (5) - Henry is listed as an "idiot".[8]
James' wife may have passed away before 1874, or they may have separated.
James was in a relationship with Sarah Marchant from at least 1874, possibly earlier. They had children together and she was listed as his wife on censuses, but they do not appear to have officially married. Sarah went back to using the surname Marchant after James' death.
Sarah had two daughters who were definitely born while James was still married. It's possible that he was their father despite this, or at least of the younger one, as she used Sharp as a middle name:
Hannah Marchant (1867-)
Sophia Sharpe (Marchant) Barton (1870-1949) [her birth was registered just as Sophy Marchant, but she used Sharp as a middle name on her marriage and death records]
James and Sarah had three children together (their births were registered with Sharpe as a middle name and the surname Marchant, though they were christened without the middle name - they used Sharpe on census records while James was alive):
William Sharpe Marchant (1874-)
Jessie Sharpe Marchant (1877-)
Leonard Sharpe Marchant (1879-1964)
All five of Sarah's children were using the surname Sharpe on the 1881 census, and are listed as James' children.
In 1881 James Sharpe (age 58, Butcher) lived at Main Street in Eye with his wife Sarah (44) and six children: Harry (16, Ag Lab), Hannah (13, Scholar), Sophia (10, Scholar), William (6, Scholar), Jessie (3), and Leonard (1).[9]
In 1891 James Sharp (age 68, Butcher) lived at Main Street in Eye with his wife Sarah (52) and four children: Harry (25, Butcher), William (16, Groom), Jessie (13, Scholar), and Leonard (11, Scholar).[10]
James Sharpe passed away in 1895, aged 71 years. His death was registered in Peterborough in the first quarter of the year.[11]
