Birthdate

Birthdate is hard to pin down. Most agree that birthdate was Dec 20, but years between 1865 and 1875 are included in sources that include Canadian Census of 1871 (1864-1865) and US Census' of 1930 & 1940 in San Diego, CA (1871-1875). His grave appears to indicate birthdate of 20 Dec 1871.

William, himself, gave various dates of his birth -- no one in the family is certain as to when it actually was. The United States Census 1870 (Michigan) dated 13 July 1870 shows that William was 5 years old at that time. His birthday later that year would have made him 6 years old in 1870, with a birth year of 1864. Assuming the Canada Census 1871 was also taken before his birthday, this would further confirm a birth year of 1864.

World War I -- Reenlisted on 13 Apr 1918 at Camp Kearny, California. He was discharged at Rockwell Field, California, USA on 29 Mar 1921 (see image). He reenlisted on 19 May 1921 at Rockwell Field, and was discharged on 5 June 1922 (see image).

Kendall, Montana

William was one of the founders of the now defunct town of Kendall, Montana, a mining town in Central Montana. Today Kendall is a ghost town owned by the Boy Scouts. "The only ghost town in the world that belongs to the Boy Scouts of America". But back at the turn of the 20th century it became a thriving mining town. William's main part in the growth of Kendall was in land development and the building of the town's hotel. "Profiting from the boom was William A. "Billy" Shaules, who had earlier homesteaded the land where the town developed and who sold lots to prospective residents. He also built an elegant 26-room hotel on the site of a spring, piped the water through the building and advertised his establishment as a "modern hotel with running water". ^[1][2]
